Notable Changes From the Previous Year
There have been a few changes from previous years. The outer rim has been painted on the front grille to match the exterior colour. The seven-slot array remains, but the ridges between the slots have now been opened to allow more air through, as the vertical dimension of the slots has been shortened.
The Rubicon trim now has a factory-installed, crash-tested Warn winch as an optional extra. The Wrangler also has ten new wheel designs, and the cabin now boasts a 12.4-inch infotainment screen with the latest infotainment software from Jeep. The PHEV is now available in Sport and Rubicon X trims and gains a 3.6-kilowatt battery to power accessories.
Infotainment and Technology Features
The highlight of the infotainment system is the new 12.3-inch touchscreen that has been horizontally cantilevered off the dash. The instrument clusters and centre screen are wrapped together, forming a type of cockpit that flows into the rest of the dashboard.
The dash has been subtly upgraded with different textures and colours, highlighting some of the accents in the cabin. It has inbuilt mounting screws that allow the attachment of accessories, such as cameras, without having to glue them in place. The infotainment system is Uconnect 5, with the standard features of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also an inbuilt subscription to Trails Guide, offering directions for over 200 trails.
Exterior Design
The Wrangler 4xe's exterior design has undergone subtle upgrades while staying true to its original look. The bold look and the exhilarating experience of wind blowing through your hair, achieved by removing doors, roof, and windscreen, are all still clearly visible. Because of the need for space to house the battery pack, the 4xe is limited to a 4-door configuration.
Interior Comfort and Cargo Space
The designers at Jeep have managed a great blend of modern and vintage Jeep characteristics in the Wrangler. The interior is utilitarian at the lower end of the trim levels but improves significantly toward the upper end, where leather and wood trims are found. The infotainment screen has an extremely bright backlight, so using it while the roof is off is no problem.
Performance Features
The Wrangler 4xe has a 2.0-litre, turbo, inline-four motor connected via a belt to a 44-horsepower electric motor at the front and a 134-horsepower electric motor at the rear. The electric motors draw their power from a 400-volt 17 kWh lithium-ion battery pack fitted under the rear seats.
This power is directed to the road through an eight-speed automatic transmission and transfer case. Irrespective of running in pure electric or as a hybrid, the Wrangler 4xe dives in rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, and a high or low four-wheel drive for off-roading.
The Wrangler 4xe has 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The Wrangle 4xe is rated at 4.8 L/100 km combined city and highway driving. The Wrangler 4xe, using its 2.0-litre engine only, returns 11.6 L/100 km around town and 11.9 L/100 km on the highway. In electric-only mode, the Wrangler 4xe will travel up to 35 kilometres.
Safety and Driver Assistance Features
The Wrangler 4xe has all the standard passive safety features, but many active safety features are contained in the optional groups. These driver assistance include Adaptive Cruise Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Adaptive Cruise Control.
